By this time, most of us must have forgotten the Hurricane Katrina tragedy in New Orleans. Most of the victims of this tragedy have recovered by this time especially with the help that they’ve received all over the world. One of the most notable things that one can remember in projects for Hurricane Katrina victims is Brad Pitt’s Make It Right which involves solar power for homes.

Looking Back on the Hurricane Katrina Tragedy

The United States was struck with its costliest natural disaster in history on August 29, 2005. Hurricane Katrina is considered to be one of the deadliest hurricanes in the United States with over 1,800 lives claimed. The city of New Orleans proved to be no match for mother nature as 80% of it was submerged in water. It was heartbreaking seeing all of the Hurricane Katrina footage on the television. However, with all the struggles and hardships brought about by the calamity, hope in humanity didn’t falter as help from all over the world poured. A variety of projects came to life including Brad Pitt’s Make It Right.

Making it Right for Lower 9th

The Make It Right project states that it builds safe, sustainable and affordable homes for working families. Brad Pitt started the Make It Right project. Apparently, Brad fell in love with the city of New Orleans from the first time he went there in 1994 and eventually built a house. When Hurricane Katrina hit the area, Brad realized that he needed to do something. Since Brad Pitt claims to be an architectural junkie and is involved in a lot of environmental projects, the Make It Right project came to light. The Eco-friendly homes were located in the Lower 9th Yard because of the amount of damage it received. Houses and buildings were completely washed up and the area became a clean slate.

Believing that the holy grail in architecture is finding ways on how to design a sustainable urban community, Making It Right houses are designed to be Eco-friendly and cost effective. How do solar panels help the environment at all? These homes use green technologies and the community is considered to have the greenest homes in America since all of them use solar power for the homes. Energy efficient features for these houses would include the use of photovoltaic solar panels on the roof to make use of the sun’s rays for electricity. Since then, the use of solar panels have significantly increased as it was brought to the public.
